The seminar was held at the Leeb du Toit Council Chamber at the University
of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, on the 23rd of November 2001. The participants
were drawn from national and provincial government departments, local and
regional NGOs, the provincial farmers’ association, local and regional
development organisations, research institutes, and academics.
The event was designed to be participatory and to create an environment of
shared learning. Several papers were presented at the outset to provide
background information to the pandemic in KwaZulu-Natal and of the
Department of Land Affairs’ HIV/AIDS policy. The issues raised in
discussion after these presentations were then discussed and debated
in an interactive and creative process, which intended to help
participants engage with the difficult subject.
The seminar was facilitated by Tessa Cousins who has considerable
experience in workshoping such events and in the rural development and
land reform arena with particular expertise in community participation.
