DNA, DNHA – National Directorate for Agricultural Hydraulics, ANE – National Roads and Bridges Administration, CFM – Mozambican Railroads Company and other institutions that have large infrastructures must re-evaluate their safety taking into account these recent floods which possibly changed the design values for which those infrastructures should be prepared to resist.
In the case of the dams, studies must be conducted for each of them to check the capacity of the spillways and the operating rules during the wet season and during floods. While dams will not be decisive for large floods such as occurred this year, they can give an important contribution both in terms of attenuation of the peak discharge and in providing an increased lead time in flood warnings. This aspect shall be taken into consideration in the studies of new dams like Moamba, Mapai and BuР№ Maria.
The height and other characteristics of protection dykes must also be evaluated and eventually increased in certain locations where a higher degree of protection is required.
Bridges and roads and railways embankments crossing the flood plains of the major rivers should be checked, and eventually measures should be taken to ensure that vital roads and railways do not suffer large damages. This may require new bridges and large culverts, heightening of the embankments, protection against scour in certain sections that may be overtopped, etc.
