Africa Insight reflects thinking on theoretical and practical developments in African studies, and about contemporary affairs on the continent. The Journal aims to provide insight into the processes of change in Africa. With this goal in mind, the Africa Institute of South Africa is planning a special issue of Africa Insight to focus on Youth in Africa over the past 10-15 years. The aim of the special issue is to undertake a wide-ranging assessment of youth development. Although young people face formidable challenges, the adoption of a youth development framework in youth policies and programmes across the continent, has been proposed as a way to approach the development and integration of young people. This special issue intends to capture the successes achieved, the obstacles encountered and the challenges that remain for youth in Africa during the waves of change that have swept across the continent.
While papers will be drawn together in various thematic areas, authors are encouraged to address:

The development and/or implementation of youth policy from a national or regional perspective;

The mainstreaming of youth issues into national and/or regional policies and programmes;

The development of youth-specific programmes;
-
Trends in youth statistics and development.
Key thematic areas could include: access to and participation in education and skills development, policies and programmes to address poverty and engender economic participation, the impact of globalisation and the uptake of technological advancements, the development of youth identities, the role and contribution of youth movements, changing patterns of youth engagement in civil society, policies and programmes addressing reproductive health, youth sexuality in the context of HIV/AIDS including gender perspectives, mental health, substance use, youth with disabilities, youth in trouble with the law, and the re-integration into society of youth involved in conflict and war.
Contributors are encouraged to submit abstracts covering other key areas addressing African youth issues.
Note to Contributors
Submissions are invited from researchers from a variety of disciplinary and cross-disciplinary backgrounds. Contributors are encouraged to submit case studies, comparative studies, longitudinal studies, studies focusing on Africa as a whole or on a local context, as well as theoretical papers. In an attempt to streamline submissions, contributors are requested to submit an abstract of 500 words. The editorial committee will review abstracts, and invitations to prepare a full manuscript will be issued on the basis of these abstracts. In order to allow for a variety of contributions, manuscripts will be limited to 4000-6000 words (including notes and references).
The guidelines of Africa Insight with regards to style and format apply. Manuscripts will be subjected to the usual peer review process.
