Background of the meeting

The work programme of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), for the period 2002/2003 included the organization of an Expert Group Meeting on Labour Markets and Employment in Southern Africa. Pursuant to this, the ECA Subregional Development Centre for Southern Africa (ECA/SRDC-SA) organized the Expert Group Meeting in Lusaka, Zambia from 3 to 6 February 2003. The objective of the Meeting was to review a draft report entitled “Labour Markets and Employment in Southern Africa – The Employment, Poverty and Development Nexus” and make proposals to ECA on labour markets and employment in Southern Africa.

The participants came mostly from the subregion as well as from out of the subregion. Participants were selected on basis of their involvement in labour, employment and related issues. These participants came from government, universities, research institutions, trade unions, employer organizations, Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and United Nations Organizations including the International Labour Organization (ILO), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Development Programme. The list of participants is presented in Annex II.
