IAEN INFORMATION RESOURCES SURVEY
The International AIDS Economics Network (IAEN / www.iaen.org) recently polled its members in 130
countries about the best information resources available to AIDS professionals worldwide. The polling
returned 85 completed surveys from 32 countries listing over 700 information resources. Approximately half
of the returned surveys were from developed countries, half from developing countries.
The following tables list those resources cited most often by IAEN members. (Note that the IAEN itself
received 96 votes, a figure that is inflated compared to other resources because the IAEN network was
used for the survey). Additional data and analysis from this survey will be available at the IAEN website
<www.iaen.org>.
CUMULATIVE RESULTS
(this table lists those information resources cited most frequently across all the
questions of the survey – approximately 700 resources cited in total):
DETAILED RESULTS
COMMENTS
The results of this survey suggest several conclusions:
-
While there are a large number of resources addressing global AIDS, only one – UNAIDS – has a
notable reach. Most of the top twenty resources, each of which has very useful information, are not
widely known.
-
Overall the number of resources listed in each survey was relatively few (only 8 per survey). This
suggests that AIDS resources are poorly developed compared to other policy (or business) topics.
We will be conducting comparison surveys in other topics soon.
-
AIDS professionals are very fragmented in where they go for information. This has significant
implications for coordination of an informed global response to AIDS.
On balance, the 700 resources cited provide a good portrait of the "information infrastructure" that informs
and coordinates the global response to AIDS. This infrastructure appears to be both thin and fragmented.
This represents one of the most important obstacles to an effective response to the AIDS epidemic.

About the IAEN
The International AIDS Economic Network (IAEN) provides data, tools and analysis on the economics of
HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment in developing countries, to help developing countries devise costeffective
responses to the global epidemic. The network began in 1993 as an informal group of researchers,
policymakers, program administrators and others from development agencies, multilateral institutions,
universities and NGOs. Since 1997 the network has championed the use of new information technologies –
especially e-mail and this website – to link researchers and the HIV/AIDS policy community world wide.
Major support has been provided by UNAIDS, the World Bank, and USAID, while additional support has
been provided by the POLICY Project, the European Commission, ANRS, and Merck & Co. Inc.
The IAEN is co-directed by Steven Forsythe, PhD, MBA, of the Futures Group International, and Jim Cashel
MD, MPP, of Forum One Communications.
