Portugal was the first country to respond to the Government's appeal with an initial pledge
of US$250,000. UN appeal donations were also immediately received through international
assistance to OCHA and to cover costs indicated by individual agencies (e.g. German, UNICEF,
National Committee, etc.). USAID and DFID (UK) supported assessment, rescue and logistics
in general through provision of air assets and boats and the South African Air Force sent
in a flying team to take part in rescue and supply missions, funded by the Netherlands. The
IFRC and its national counterpart mobilised to provide shelter support and assist with camp
management. The UK's Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) prepared up a programme of
assistance for Zambezia province of over US$ one million. On the ground DEC agencies, Food
for the Hungry International, ACF, International and National Red Cross agencies, World
Vision, Oxfam, Goal, the Christian Council of Mozambique, Action Aid, Save the Children and
MSF are among the many organisations that provided vital support to response implementation
in all flood affected areas.
